“The woman saw that the tree was good for food and delightful to look at, and that it was desirable for obtaining wisdom. So she took some of its fruit and ate it; she also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and he ate it.”
— Genesis 3:6 CSB
Why is it so difficult to believe that we have value? In the beginning, humanity did not struggle with this question. God created man and woman in His image and declared His creation good. Their worth was not something they had to prove or achieve—it was something they received from the God who made them. But the first distortion entered the garden when the serpent questioned God’s goodness and convinced Eve that what God had given was not enough. The temptation was not simply to take the fruit; it was to believe that identity could be found apart from the One who gave it. That same distortion continues today when we measure ourselves by achievement, appearance, approval, or usefulness. Sin did not erase the image of God within us, but it did distort our understanding of where our worth comes from.
Scripture reveals that our dignity has always been rooted in God’s character. He is a Creator who forms with intention, a Father who pursues His children, and a Redeemer who restores what has been broken. Even after Adam and Eve hid from Him, God moved toward them and called, “Where are you?” (Genesis 3:9). Through Christ, God does not simply tell us that we are valuable—He demonstrates the depth of our worth by giving Himself for us. The cross reveals that our dignity was never dependent on our ability to become enough. It was always grounded in the love of the One who created us and calls us His own.
The distortion of sin teaches us to look away from the source of our identity. It encourages us to search for worth in things that cannot sustain it and to measure ourselves by standards that continually shift. But the voice of God remains steady. Before we accomplished anything, before anyone praised us or criticized us, before we succeeded or failed, we were already known and loved by our Creator. In Christ, we are not fighting to earn a place before God. We are returning to the truth that we were made to reflect Him.
Standing Tall Before the King
Today, spend a few moments standing in prayer. Place your feet firmly on the ground and lift your posture—not in pride, but in remembrance. You are standing before the King who made you. Open your hands as a symbol of receiving. As you breathe in, pray: “You made me in Your image.” As you breathe out, pray: “My worth comes from You alone.” Remain there for a moment. Let your body reflect the truth your heart is learning: you do not come before God as someone trying to earn a place. You come as His creation, welcomed by His grace.
